What is Reconstructive Surgery?
Reconstructive surgery encompasses procedures that are intended to improve the natural function and appearance of a facial feature or part of the body. While cosmetic surgery is performed for purely aesthetic reasons, reconstructive surgery aims to address problems caused by congenital defects, injury, trauma, cancer treatment and other diseases.
Benefits of Reconstructive Surgery
As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Levens performs reconstructive surgery on men, women and children to achieve two goals:
- Give the facial or body feature a more pleasing and natural appearance to the extent possible
- Restore or enhance function of the physical feature
The most common reconstructive surgery procedures involve restoring the breasts, skin and other structures after cancer treatment.
Reconstructive Surgery Procedures Offered
Mastectomy (Breast Reconstruction)
Breast reconstruction is performed after mastectomy and lumpectomy, to recreate one or both breasts. Dr. Levens can use a variety of techniques to perform this surgery, including procedures that use breast implants and natural body tissues.
Skin cancer has different forms, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. After removal of these skin cancers, patients undergo a procedure to reconstruct the tissue, to minimize negative effects on aesthetic appearance. Skin cancers can be treated with different methods, depending on the type of cancer, its stage of growth, and its location on your body.
Am I a Good Candidate for Reconstructive Surgery?
Although reconstructive surgery can address the majority of issues related to cancer treatment, not everyone is an ideal candidate for the procedures. In order to be considered for a specific type of reconstructive surgery, you must have adequate donor tissue to perform the reconstruction. The tissue may be localized around the defect, or Dr. Levens may harvest tissue from other areas of your body.
How Much Does Reconstructive Surgery Cost?
In most cases, reconstructive surgery is covered by medical insurance. Our patient coordinator will help you verify coverage prior to your surgery. The cost of reconstructive surgery is based upon an individual treatment plan that Dr. Levens develops during your consultation. After the appointment, we provide you with a total cost and explain our payment options, including cash, personal check, Visa®, MasterCard® and American Express®. If you are interested in financing your portion of the cost for reconstructive surgery, our patient coordinators will explain how to apply for CareCredit®, Alphaeon Credit, or Prosper® Healthcare Lending.
