Neck Lift in Fort Lauderdale, FL

What Is Neck Lift Surgery?

The neck is prone to exhibit sagging skin and extra fat. For many people in Fort Lauderdale and Broward County, these are common signs of the aging process. For others, they are an unfortunate result of genetic factors and lifestyle choices. Fortunately, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David J. Levens can perform several cosmetic procedures to rejuvenate the neck area, including neck lift surgery at his Coral Springs practice.

What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift, also called a cervicoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that addresses signs of agingspecifically in the neck region. It differs from a full facelift which also tightens the entire lowerface. The goal of a neck lift is to restore a smoother, tighter, and more youthful appearance tothe neck by removing excess skin and fat. It is typically performed in conjunction with a faceliftto provide comprehensive facial rejuvenation, but it may be performed on its own for youngerpatients exclusively struggling with loose neck skin.

How Does Neck Lift Surgery Work?

During a neck lift, incisions are made under the chin and/or behind the ears. Dr. Levens thensculpts away excess fatty deposits and tightens the platysma neck muscles using sutures.Excess skin is removed and the remainingskin is smoothed and redraped. Liposuction mayalso be used to refine the neck contour.

What are the Benefits of a Neck Lift?

A neck lift can take years off your appearance by:

  • Giving the jawline and area under the chin more definition.
  • Eliminating banding, “turkey wattle” and other embarrassing cosmetic signs of aging.
  • Smoothing out the fat and tightening underlying muscles to give the neck a smooth and youthful appearance.

Are You A Candidate For a Neck Lift?

The best candidates for a neck lift are:

  • Those who have good skin elasticity that will reshape to the neck's new contours
  • Healthy men and women of any age
  • Individuals who are mature enough physically and emotionally to handle the procedure

If you meet these criteria, you might be a good candidate for a neck lift. However, the best wayto determine your candidacy is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Levens. During yourconsultation, you can discuss your cosmetic goals as he helps identify whether a neck lift isappropriate for you. If it is, he’lldevelop a personalized treatment plan and explain what you canexpect leading up to, during and after your neck lift surgery.

What is Neck Lift Surgery Like?

What Happens During Neck Lift Surgery?

Depending on which problems you exhibit, Dr. Levens will choose the proper neck lift technique. Some patients may benefit from skin tightening while others need lifting of the sagging platysma muscle (a muscle that extends from the collarbone to the jaw). If the only problem is excess fat, then liposuction is typically the best choice. Dr. Levens will use a local or general anesthetic, depending on your needs. For a typical neck lift, Dr. Levens will use a technique that is similar to a facelift. He performs an incision starting at the front of the earlobe, which travels around the back of your ear into your hairline. Sagging tissue and fat are removed or tightened, thereby enhancing the contour of the lower face and neck. Incisions are closed with sutures and covered with a dressing and surgical tape. Neck lift surgery may last one to two hours.

What are the Risks of a Neck Lift?

There are a few important risks to consider before pursuing a neck lift.

Sensation Risks

Some patients experience temporary numbness or nerve damage in the neck area that can last several weeks or months after surgery.

Skin Laxity Risks

If the patient has poor skin elasticity, the neck skin may not redrape tightly over the elevated tissues. This could result in recurrent skin looseness or banding in the neck.

Surgical Risks

In a small percentage of cases, infrequent complications associated with many surgicalprocedures may occur, which include possible infection, skin damage, fluid accumulation, bleeding, and scarring or pigment changes. Dr. Levens will give you detailed information aboutthese and other rare risks during his discussion with you and in written information about necklift surgery.

What is Neck Lift Recovery Like?

How Painful is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift involves some postoperative discomfort, but this is usually manageable with medication. Patients commonly experience bruising, swelling, tightness, and numbness in the neck and jawline after surgery. Most patients on ly need prescription pain medication for the first few days. Discomfort typically peaks in the first 48 hours then subsides. Dr. Levens may recommend wearing a chin strap or elastic bandage around the face and neck to provide gentle compression while healing.

How Long is Neck Lift Recovery?

There is moderate downtime after a neck lift and patients typically need 1-2 weeks off work and social activities. Most patients make a full recovery within 4-6 weeks. The typical schedule of recovery is:

  • Bruising, swelling, and tightness for 10-14 days.
  • Return to non-strenuous work and social activities within 14 days.
  • Refrain from any vigorous exercise for 3-4 weeks to protect the incisions.
  • Results visible in 4-6 weeks.
  • Avoid sun exposure to incision sites for at least 6 months.

Dr. Levens will provide instructions on caring for the incisions and will encourage you to gradually increase activity over the first month. For the first couple weeks, you should avoid straining the neck muscles and limit exercise. This includes sleeping with the head elevated. Follow all post-op guidelines carefully for optimal healing.

How Long Does Tightness Last After a Neck Lift?

For most patients, the feeling of tightness in the neck will dissipate approximately two to three weeks after the neck lift surgery. However, it’s important to remember that every patient is unique, and in rare cases, the sensation of tightness may persist for several weeks or months longer. Following the post-operative instructions given by Dr. Levens is the best way to progress through your recovery and overcome these symptoms as soon as possible.

When Can You Exercise After a Neck Lift?

Most patients canresume light exercise within a few weeks of their neck lift surgery. However, this should be limited to gentle exercises such as cardio activities, which do not significantlyinvolve the neck muscles. Patients can ease into more strenuous exercises and activitiesapproximately 4-6 weeks after surgery. However, be sure to get approval from Dr. Levensduring a follow-up appointment before resuming these activities.

How Long Does a Neck Lift Last?

For most patients, the results of a neck lift will last for 10to 15 years. It’s important tounderstand that the face and neck will continue to age after the neck lift surgery, so it’s possiblethat wrinkles and sagging skin redevelop in the neck in the years that follow your neck lift. Withgood skincare and lifestyle habits, patients can prolong the results of their neck lift. Eventually, touch up procedures may be necessary to maintain your initial results.
