After one laser hair removal treatment, your skin will be smooth and hairless, but you won’t be done yet. It will take several treatments to do the job completely and to provide lasting results.

Hair grows in cycles, usually every four to six weeks, depending on the area of the body. Laser hair removal will only work on actively growing hairs.

When your first session is completed, the laser treated hairs fall out and often your pores will get smaller. When your hairs begin to grow back, they will be finer and weaker. It will take a few more treatments to get to the point where these hairs just stop growing back.

How Many Sessions Will It Take?

The answer is, it varies from person to person, and it depends upon the laser device being used. The number of sessions you will need depends on many different factors including your skin type, the color and texture of your hair, your hair’s natural thickness, and the amount of hair that you have to be treated. If you have excessive hair growth due to a hormonal imbalance, more sessions may be needed. Some people can permanently remove unwanted hair in only three or four sessions while others will need eight or ten sessions. Usually the time required between sessions is about four to eight weeks.

Myths Debunked

Laser hair removal is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the United States, but still the procedure is surrounded by common myths and misconceptions. Here are a few of them:

  • Laser hair removal is expensive. – Yes, it will cost you more upfront, but in the long run, you’ll save money on waxing, razors, shaving cream, etc.
  • It doesn’t work on dark skin. – This used to be true with old technology, but it is no longer true.
  • Laser hair removal is time consuming. – Not true. Areas as large as the lower legs can be treated in about half an hour.
  • Laser hair removal can be dangerous. – False. Laser hair removal systems approved by the FDA do not emit radiation. Lasers will not burn or damage the skin.
